Wired remote with display?

Wired Remote with Display for Dell DJ?

A guy over at Dell.com's support forums is reporting that the Nomad Jukebox FM Wired Remote by Creative is compatible with the Dell DJ mp3 players. Immediately I saw that the end connector was the same as my DJ remote. I plugged it into the remote and bam! it works! The display is illuminated DJ blue as well! The info it displays include the current track, track time, play control indicator, battery and volume control. He has not been able to use it's microphone or FM tuner as of yet, but hopefully he will be able to make them work. Hop over to this link to see the pictures of his remote connected to his DJ. The only drawback? A $50-$70 price tag. Dell has yet to comment on this report.

I just got the Creative remote tonight; awesome! Here's what I've been able to do with it:
  • Turn the DJ on/off
  • Normal play functions (as a bonus, there's an actual "stop" button that works on the remote)
  • Volume
  • Pause/stop voice recording (have to kick off the recording from the DJ)
  • Turn on/off custom EQ setting

I was able to find a brand-new one on e-bay for $35 shipped. My only complaint is that headphones have to plug into the end of the remote - I wish it had a pigtail up by the DJ for the headphones. I have a spare DJ remote I will dissect to see if adding a plug there is feasible.

I did think the remote would be a bit larger though - the display is pretty small, but still pretty easy to read, although it has to be pretty close to you.

With the "Pause/stop voice recording"....

Can you simply hit the pause button (on the remote) again to resume recording? Or do you have to resume recording from the DJ?

Yes, you can resume recording with the remote. The only thing you can't do is initiate recording. Once the stop button on the remote is pressed, the only way to get it into record mode again is to press the record button on the DJ itself.

Here are the functions that do not work:
  • FM receiver
  • Mic
  • Function button

I don't care to listen to the radio or do voice recordings, so it's no big loss for me not having those functions.

I have only had a MP3 player since December and I have yet to find a reason why anyone would need a wired remote control for a device that is portable. One of the reasons for having a MP3 player is the portability, so that you can take it ANYWHERE. It just looks useless to me, can someone please fill me in as to WHY you would need one.

Some people get it, some people don't

I use my DJ a lot in the car. I leave it in the glovebox so it's not out in the open; I don't have to stash it every time I get out of the car. I can control it with the remote, and just drop it between the seats when I get out of the car. Having a display on the remote is really nice - not essential, but nice to see what's playing on the DJ.

I also use it when I fly - I don't like whipping out the DJ in front of a bunch of people in unfamiliar territory.

The remote is just an added convience. It would be really nice if the DJ was Bluetooth enabled; a pair of Bluetooth headphones (provided they overcome the bandwidth issue) and a Bluetooth remote

A remote can be useful in many situations. Curt already named a couple of good ones.

Also, I've seen many students around campus with an MP3 or Minidisc player in their pocket or backpack, with a wired remote in-hand as they walk across campus.

Another thing I've seen as a big use is at the gym, or jogging. You can just clip the player on your belt (or storage pack of various kinds), and still have the remote easily accessible. An MP3 player is pretty bulky to constantly have in your hand while you exercise. Whereas a remote is very slim, fitting comfortably in your palm.

If you're the type of person who just loads a playlist and lets it run straight through, then a remote probably isn't very necessary. However, if you like to change tracks very often it can be a very convenient accessory to own.

The only ones that are still currently on eBay are set at around $50 - $60. Might as well just order from an online vendor somewhere for that price.

Any news on getting the Nomad fm tuner to work?

What are the options, if any, for an fm tuner with the dj?
