First of all, are you a mom or dad or what? j/k You can use a variety of programs to turn your (or your son's) CDs into mp3s. Getting music online is obviously an endevour. There are a variety of legal (iTunes, eMusic, Napster) and not legal (not sure if I'm even allowed to mention them, so let's say "Kazaa-like peer-to-peer programs") methods to get music. Allofmp3.com falls somewhere in the middle; probably technically legal and not currently the target of any legal challenges I know of, but it isn't likely making the RIAA jump for joy, either. Anyway, you can read more in the mp3 section of this forum. Here's a good thread: Check me out! __________________ Happy owner of a Dell DJ20 since April, 2004 |

But it's not illegal for us to download it in the U.S., as I understand it, if they have the right to sell/distribute it to you. So it's not illegal for us to download it as they are following the law in Russia by paying money to ROMS. There doesn't appear to be any international law that applies yet, so that's why I said it appears to be technically legal for everyone involved. __________________ Happy owner of a Dell DJ20 since April, 2004 Last edited by mentarman : 06-19-2004 at 02:51 AM. | |

                    Thanks again everyone...

I am the mom! I told you all that before...lol Anyway, we are up and running with the dj and dell gave us a thing for 20 free downloads off of musicmatch, so he has been getting songs from there for now. He doesn't really want to spend money for getting songs, but the deal is if he has the mp3 player, where he gets his music from has to be on the up and up...As the MOM, I have to set some rules here... I found 2 sites that both have like a 25.00 sign up fee and then you can download all you want.... but I know nothing about them. Anyway, thanks for the links... and the help, from here on out any ?s will probably be from my son, Tyler... Thanks again you all are the best! Tee |

Technically, it is not legal...but thats not the important question. The important question is: Would the RIAA sue someone who uses the service? No, never. Why? Because the people using the service are paying for the music, how are they supposed to know the artists are not getting any money for the music? There would be no support for the RIAA if they started going after users who are trying to actually do the right thing by paying for it. So, is it legal, no, is it safe to use, yes. Erik

on allofmp3.com, did i read that the songs are like $0.01 per MB (or something similar)? Who, in their right mind, would assume that $0.03 to be a fair price to pay for a song, especially when the other services want $0.80 to $0.99? DtR |
