Which compression codec do you use?

Hey folks,

I'm another newbie who has yet to receive the DJ, but mine should be here in the next week.

I was wondering and would like to take an informal poll as to which compression codec you all use. Please vote on the attached poll. Feel free to post with your explanations as to why you use a specific codec rather than another.

The never ending battle of "Quantity vs. Quality"

Thanks!
-Tim

I guess I'm a quantity nut, plus the fact that my ears aren't good enough to tell the difference between any of the codes ... so, I voted CD Quality.

Actually, the standard for CD quality is 128kbps for MP3s...although 192 sounds nice!

Yeah I know...but some programs consider 192 CD-quality. It's all good.

I tried playing a vbr song that was around 360 kb/s, and it would not play.

And to answer the original question I use 192 kb/s mp3 and 160 kb/s aac.

320Kbps MP3

As I've stated before though, it's only because many of my albums were ripped prior to my DJ purchase for use on my HTPC (home theater PC) that used to be a part of my home system.... as well as the fact that the higher bitrates really sound amazing for my jazz tracks compared to the lower bitrate encodes I've done.

If I were starting from scratch though, I would likely just use around 192Kbps VBR (variable bitrate) MP3 for all my tracks.

I wonder, if you convert WMA to MP3, you would lose quality, right? Compared to just burning it directly from the CD as MP3. Right??

Oh, and I got a 312VBR WMA song to play on my DJ. I think 320VBR WMA is the highest WMA the DJ will play.

Yes, when you convert you lose a lot of quality. Avoid doing it unless it is absolutely necessary.

Yep, Chooch is correct.

Anytime your original file in a conversion is a lossy format (like WMA), you're going to lose some quality. It's always best to convert straight from the CD, or from a lossless format.

actually, it's not... that's a fake standard, something the media and companies, but certainly not certain people with gifted ears will tell you (although this in no way is to ridicule 'em and doesn't imply that i can differentiate between alt preset standard and alt preset extreme - sorry, it must be the mood)
