Smile Audiobooks

I just received my DJ Digital yesterday and would like to download audiobooks. Can anyone recommend a good site?

I have no experiece with it, but I have read many posts about www.audible.com and it seems that everyone that has it enjoys it very much.

From what you've read, can I download a book to my DJ? If so, what format is the file in?

P.S. Thanks for responding...

I have the complete old and new testaments plus some language lessons all in MP3. They take up some space but I'm not a big music fan. I bought them (CDs) on eBay and transfered to the DJ. I would imagine that the audio books services would be compatible.

In actuality, audible.com uses proprietary file formats and requires a device that supports one of those formats. At this time the Dell DJ does not support audible files. There are ways to work around the issue (I think the official Dell DJ forums have a link), but these do require a bit of work. If audible support is an important feature, the DJ is probably not the player of choice for you.

Audible format is .aa
I think the easiest route would be buying the audiobook from the ITMS and then burn to CD. Then rip to MP3.

You can burn audible content to cd too, then rip to mp3. It's too bad that the DJ doesn't support audible.com files. It is such a great service (and one of the reasons my ipod is the DAP that is usually in my car).

Because you lose sound quality, and audiobook sound quality is already pretty poor (around 92 kb/s I believe). Plus, audible files self bookmark themselves. I can come back to the book after listening to music and it knows where I left off. You can't do that with a mp3 audiobook file.

so Chooch is saying that if you cared about audiobooks, you should have bought a player that supported the format (ex. iPod)

You would not be burning just one CD, more like 4 or 5 CD's. Most audiobooks are 4-6 hours in length with a file size of only 60-80 meg.
Reripping as MP3 would create multiple files for one audiobook, you would lose the chapter marks, and your file size would increase greatly.
You can work around it, but it's a pain. To do it right you really need a DAP that supports the .aa file format, like the iPod.

Thank you all for your feedback! This site has been so helpful! I've already purchased the Dell DJ 20G and from this site I have learned how to download my book from "audio.com" and convert it to an MP3 format. However, as one person stated and I have found to be true, I cannot "bookmark" where I left off. That is a problem.

I don't believe I'll be downloading any more books no time soon. My main reason for buying the player was to listen to music.

Again, "thank you" all for helping me.

Now -- back to the site to find a better pair of ear plugs to buy!!
