New Hard Drive?

Check out this post from the Dell site:http://forums.us.dell.com/supportfo...essage.id=16000 Interesting, huh? They don't usually tip their hand about changes.

Well, maybe there is something to all the broken/clicking/failing dj hard drive posts after all. The problem must have been bigger than we have known. (btw, this is only speculation)

Dell no doubt keeps very close track of the % they have to replace, and why. They also have an "expected" failure rate for the device. They certainly keep track of the Creative HD from Hitachi problems too. Maybe this HD has a higher than expected failure rate?

Well, I don't want to drown anyone's enthusiasm of the Dell mod's post..... but I'd like to simply say that I personally won't believe it until I see proof.

I haven't seen any problems out of the DJ mod (ChrisM), but I know in the past some of the mods on other portions of Dell's site have been known to spout off incorrect/misinformed news. Unless something has changed, they don't have a lot of authority other than keeping up the forums, so they're generally not the first to be informed of things like this.

I hope that his news is true, but I'd really like to see more information on the topic before I'm sold on it.

Glad For the Extended Warranty

I debated getting the extended warranty on the DJ15 I received yesterday. I usually don't go for things like that. But, I decided to do it after reading the posts about drive issues. Now I am glad I did. At least I have until June 2006 to get the new drive for free if my Hitachi drive breaks. I am sure it would cost more than the $49 I paid for the extended warranty to replace the drive out of warranty. I will sleep well tonight

hmm... quick question......

if you guys had a perfectly (knock on wood) working dj despite only a few resets, would you opt in to get the new drive or would you hold out with your original drive

if my warrenty is ending what would you do... i have it until december so i am not sure what i would do

what would a different hard drive mean for the dj? would it offer any benefits over the current hard drive?

thanks

What the???

The DJ has been out for a while, and you think they would have take the initiative to change hard drive makers before now. I have already sent my DJ back once to be fixed (I got the dreaded click of death) and I really don't want to again, but these hard drives are crap obviously.

Question-How do you go about purchasing the extended warranty for the DJ after you already have it? Do I just need to call Dell Support to do so. I want to so that if my DJ does fail after the first year, I wanna get it replaced and not be out my $235.

Pretty sure you cannot buy an extended warranty after the initial purchase is completed. It's not like a car extended warranty.

I know the hard drive quality issue is one that seems to get quite a bit of discussion, but I think people need to realize that 1.8 inch hard drives are fairly new technology. It is easy to blame Dell for sticking with the Hitachi drives, but I imagine it was simply a matter of needing another manufacturer to enter the market with sufficient numbers to satisfy Dell's manufacturing needs. I believe that there are other devices on the market that use the same drive .. the Rio Karma comes to mind. If you frequent the product specific boards for any hard drive based player I think you will find that a good majority of the problems encountered are hard drive failures. I hope Dell (and other manufacturers for that matter) has found a more reliable solution, but anyone that buys a HD-based player should know the risk of a drive failure will always be present.
