Transferring Music from ipod

Ok, my friend has a 20gb ipod (and win xp home) and he is getting a new computer so he needs to transfer all his music to that computer when he gets it. Is there a way in Itunes to burn all the music to a dvd (that way it would only take a few discs). Or is there an option in itunes to where when you hook up the ipod it doesnt sync automatically. Because i know that (how he's got it set up anyways) if you delete a playlist or songs from the itunes library, then it will delete it off the ipod also. Does anybody know how to keep this from happening? I dont have itunes so im not sure how to do it, and he's not the most computer literate .

I don't think iTunes will archive stuff, but WinXP ought to have a facility to do so -- he should be able to just archive the file tree containing all the music. I'd also make sure he exports the iTunes library into XML so he can the import it on the new computer.

Also, there is a setting in the iPod options window (accessible from iTunes when the ipod is connected) to enable/disable automatic updating. But even then you'd need to use third-party software to get all the music off the iPod, since it is a slave device to iTunes.

I'd definitely recommend going with the archive to DVD route to be safe.

I've been playing with itunes alot and there is an option (prefs/burning) to create a data cd/dvd for archiving.
