Question Hacking the DJ Remote

Here's the problem - I do a lot of around town driving, and I love my Dell DJ. However, the act of turning the player on and off at each stop is getting annoying.

So, I've come up with a solution. I'd like to take the remote I bought with the DJ, pop the cover off, and hardwire it to the car such that when the radio is turned on, the player will turn on. As the radio turns off, so does the DJ. I know I can accomplish this using the same power-on lead that turns on the power antenna and sub amplifier.

I've run into a bit of a roadblock - I don't know how to do it electronically. Holding the Pause/Play button on the remote powers on/off the player. I'll need a circuit that can send close (press down) the button when it detects that the power has changed (from off to on, or vice versa).

Has anybody done anything like this before? Or, even better, does anybody know where I can get a wiring diagram for this? I've always been a tinkerer, and can modify it to fit my needs, provided I've got some specs as to which electronic components to buy and how to connect them.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

If you turn on the radio and the DJ turns on two, then you will be hearing two songs which will be really annoying. I mean, the radio will be playing while the DJ is playing. I think it would be really hard to do something like that. Kind of a waste of time and money. You can just buy a Cupholder to keep your DJ in, and tape the remote onto your dashboard. Then you can push the remote button whenever you want to turn the DJ on.

lol, duct tape would work .. haha .. i think that would get annoying too, why don't you just pause it, instead of turning it off. it has a 15 minute idle shutdown, so if tyour out of the car for more then 15 minutes, it will turn of and not waste battery.

You can acutually change it to as low as 5 minute idle shutdown. That would save more batteries. Or you can just get a car charger.

yeah...i don't understand what he is saying, it says everytime you stop, do that mean at every stop light you turn your dj off, or just when you stop to go to the store or sumthing, not 100% on this.

Let's not make it more complex than it is. Why would he want it to turn off at every stop light?
And I don't think his problem is battery life necessarily. It's just annoying to have to turn it off then on again every time you get in and out of the car if you do that a lot.
I think it's actually a pretty cool idea. I hope it works out for you.

I'm not big on wiring with electronics and such, but here is my goal. Wire my DJ into my car (mayble proclip holder), built into the auxill ofcourse. Heres the cool
part. Have the controls of the DJ (except maybe navigation) on my steering wheel. And maybe a big lcd display showin whats on the dj. If anyone has done something similar, show pics!!

I just pause mine when I get out of the car. If I get back in within 15 min I just unpause, if its longer I turn it back on. Uses no battery on pause (no play no light).

It definately consumes power if it's on... I mean then why bother shutting it off. Why would you need the idle shutdown if it didn't consume power when it was idle?? Yea, it's tiny, insignifcant amounts of power, but it still does consume some power... or maybe I'm completely wrong...

Thanks for your help guys. I have been taking advantage of the idle shutdown, but pausing it is still something that has to be done _every_time_ I turn the car off. Mentarman can tell what I'm getting at - not turning it off at every stoplight, but getting the DJ to turn itself on and off with the head unit, when I turn the car off and on. I'd also like to do something like what RBCello mentioned, though not necessarily on the steering wheel, or with the LCD display.

At any rate, I like things to be clean, without wires running everywhere and such. Even though the DJ is a beautiful thing, I'd like to keep it out of the way, like in the glovebox. What I'm looking for is transparent operation - I don't want to know it's there... you don't turn your cd player off and on when you turn the car off and on, so why should the DJ have to be?

Ideally, it would turn on with the amplifier/head unit/radio/whatever, using the same power-on lead that turns on your subs, power antenna, and other stuff. It'd know when that power turned off, and turn the DJ off as well. Basically I'm looking for schematics and a component list, so I can go to the store, buy it, and build it. Any other takers?

Just wanted to get rid of this misconception. THE DJ IS NOT A CD PLAYER. CD players just have a function to play a cd. It spins and stops. However, the DJ is almost like a mini computer. I turn my home stereo system off and on all the time, but not my computer as much. Just thought it was something to think about.

I agree. However, while it is a mini-computer, its function is like that of a CD player, in that you turn it off when you're not using it. Think of a laptop - it runs on batteries too and you don't leave it on all day if you'e not using it (while it's on batteries)...

One argument is that I could get a car charger and just leave it on all the time - good idea, but I don't want to have the extra wiring everywhere. I'm considering wiring it directly to the car though for that, so whenever the car's on, it's plugged in and charging. Just something else to consider....

With a 16 hour battery life though, it would take a pretty long car trip to drain it. I guess it would be a real hassle if you always left the DJ in the car though. However, I like take my DJ with me if I get out of my car, so wiring up would cause more problems. How in the world are you going to get it to work, seems like a really hard project. Are you thinking about splicing wires and taking apart the car radio?? Also make sure you don't mess up or else you might cause damage to your car. Good luck and tell me what happens.

You have a good point, but however, you said the DJ runs on a battery. The more you turn this machine on and off, the more you are using the battery, meaning you are wearing it out more. CD players have replaceable batteries, so you don't care. The DJ on the other hand, has a a none replaceable battery. So if you keep turning it on and off, you are little by little making that battery be able to hold less and less juice. The only way to replace the battery is void the warranty...........or by another DJ.
