Something I just heard.

I now have around 75 albums on my DJ; mostly Classic Rock, and a high percentage of those are greatest hits collections.

Last night I plugged in my Sony Fontopia 51s, laid back with the lights off, and really cranked it up. I played at a level which was like concert hall loud. What I heard, were things on songs I have never heard before. Some songs were tunes I had listened to hundreds of times over the last 30 plus years, and last night with the DJ cranked really loud, I was in total bliss. The sound was awesome, and I heard shades and nuances and notes of these songs that I never heard on my hi-fi equipment or old fashioned studio style headphones.

The DJ really rocks. I rip all of my tunes to either WMA 128 or, mostly, MP3 128. I have no idea what a different format or bitrate could possibly sound like, or for that matter how I can improve the headphones. I cannot imagine what the IPOD or other MP3 players could sound like if they are rated as sounding better.

In short, this is one really nice piece of equipment.

Hey GovtLawyer,

I know EXACTLY what you mean! Like you, I have songs that I've listened to for years over and over again and since I've been listening to them with my DJ and Sony MDR-EX51LP Fontopia headphones, I'm amazed at the things that I never picked up on before.

It really gives me a greater appreciation for the music I listen to.

Now try listening to your music through GOOD headphones and you will really be amazed. j/k

The ex51/71's are good cheap (step up from crappy stock earbuds). They just over emphasize bass and sound muddy. Although for 40 to 60 dollars, they are not too bad.

Pros
-Amazing Sound
-Foldable
-you can get it for less than $20.00 on ebay...!

Cons
-Too Big, bulky
-Uses battery (optional-used for noise canceling)

I have never been a headphone snob, but I bit the bullet and ordered a pair of shure e3's on sale. They were over $40 dollars off the $170 price tag. They sound awesome. The music sounds so "crisp" and separated.

At first I did not like them at all and I thought they sounded horrible. The problem was I did not have a good fit. I finally found a set of earpieces that worked good and the sound was amazing.

I also "burned" them in for about 60 hours.

That means that you "break them in" by playing them for awhile at medium to high volume. Sort of like letting a bottle of fine wine "breathe"! But it works with headphones, esp with the bass response.

I have a pair of Sennheiser PXC250s... they're noise cancelling, small, and light. They can be had for about $100 now... the sound is really really good; extremely clear, although maybe a bit treble-heavy. I compared it to a pair of cheap Sony studio headphones, and the clarity of the Sennheisers made the Sony pair sound like it was underwater. And the clarity even applies to the bass - well-defined, not muddy, tight and low.

The noise cancelling is quite good, and the reduction definitely helps reduce stress on the plane or in a loud environment.

It's also really nice not to have to jam anything into my ear; that's not comfortable, nor is it very appealing...

The only problem is the noise-cancelling pack, which can be a bit of a pain, although I just stick it in my pocket when walking around.

Are the pxc250's traditional over the head style headphones?

Yes they are. They are also closed (as opposed to open air) and are based off of the PX200's. They are very disappointing sounding for Senns. My PX200's now sit on the shelf too. Definately much nicer headphones are available for less money.

I'll never buy anything Aiwa again...I've known about eight people who have bought Aiwa stereos, including myself, only to have the cd players quit working after a few years. There was a class action lawsuit against them, so I got mine repaired for free, only to have it stop working again a week later.
