I feel sorry for ipod mini users.....

No, I take that back.....If you want to read something funny, go to ipodlounge.com and read about all the problems people are having with their ipod minis.......Meanwhile, I will be listening to my DJ problem-free with three times the battery life.....

I am sure MusicMan will have something to say about this.

He's going to be in a corner, alone on this one. 5 people at my school had an iPod Mini. 3 of them had the "headphone jack problem", 1 returned his do to what he said was, "Piss poor battery life, and small storage", and the other was dropped, and the HD exploded.

That's a 100% customer dissatisfaction, from all the people I know. That's the worst news of any product I've known about.

People came down on the mini because of its relatively high price compared to the ipod. 4G Mini is $250, while a 15G ipod is $300. But that misses the point. The mini is going after the 'small HD' market such as Rio Nitrus/Eigen, and Creative Muvo 1.5G/4G. Considering a 512MB solid state player is around $150-175, 4G for $250 looks like a good deal.

So I think it unfair to compare the ipod mini to the DJ since its not fair to compare the ipod mini to the ipod itself. They are addressing different market segments.

Yeah, and to think I paid like $125 for an original MuVo 128 when it came out. 2-3hr battery (maybe) no display, mine wouldn't play wma. It's comin' a long way whatever you buy.

$250 for a mini is not a good deal to me personally......I also thought it was funny that Apple is allowing people to purchase 15 gb "regular" ipods for the same price as the mini in order to compensate for the lack of supply......Why in the world anyone would want a mini over a 15 gb regular ipod is beyond me......size does not matter that much between the two..........Someone also needs to tell Apple that Easter is over.....Besides Silver, why would anyone want a pastel colored music player?

snaimpally hit the nail on the head. Might not be a good deal to you, but you obviously had a different need that the iPod mini couldn't fulfill. To some the form factor along with good size storage fits their desires. Plus, there is some comfort to owning an iPod - they have built a great reputation from a solid player that nobody else has been able to match, not even the Dell DJ.

It's not like the DJ was (or is) perfect. I seem to remember everyone crying when the DJ was locking up, crashing and constantly rebuilding indexes, and that was after a second firmware revision (the DJ is currently on its third firmware revision). I guess all that can be forgotten when the current problems belong to Apple. Where is everyone pointing out all the current issues with the other players?

There are some serious problems Apple is going to have to address with the new mini, but I believe they will get it sorted in rather short order. I plan on buying a mini or two after they get the issues resolved. It's nice to be able to choose a color too.

I agree.......I just find it funny that the mini gets all of these rave reviews, yet the "actual users" are complaining about its many shortfalls (battery life, locking up, crackling sounds, price, etc...).......I think the original ipod was a mark of genius (I would buy one if the price were right....price is my biggest gripe with Apple).....However, it seems to me that the mini is riding big brother's coat-tail........But honestly, you mean to tell me you would rather have a 4gb mini than a 15 gb regular when Apple is offering them for the same price?

Well of course if you look in a troubleshooting forum then you shouldn't expect a lot of positive posts. And I think the colors are brilliant... well, some. I like the blue, green, and silver.

Finally, XKalibur brings some sense to this thread.....As far as the problems with the mini goes, I am basing my comments on other things besides the ipod help forums......it's been all over the news today....

Well, my mini's still working fine and once again, there is an element of mis-reporting here. Apple is not selling the 15GB for $249 to anyone. They have emailed customers who have currently unfulfilled orders for minis, explaining that, due to the stupidly high demand for the too expensive device, they cannot ship on the date they were originally given. Apple have offered these customers only the choice of receiving a 15GB at no extra cost.

Apple have already sold in excess of 100,000 mini's. There are always going to be a number of bad eggs in a number that huge. How many DJ's have been sold? Dell won't even release the figures.

And please don't feel sorry for us mini owners, the worst that will happen is that we'll have our devices replaced with new ones. Besides, from reading this forum, DJ owners have enough problems of their own to worry about.

As an owner of a DJ and "co-owner" of an iPod I have had no bad experiences with the pod (owned by my daughter, who has not reached its capabilities I can assure you, in terms of downloads, use, etc), I have had only minimal problems with the DJ (really none after abandoming MM and using Dudebox). I have to admit that the iPod is a sleeker issue aesthetically, and keeps a better profile in the pocket, with more accessories available for it, but the DJ is better at finding and selecting tracks using its wheel and interface (I do not like having to "back out" of the ipod menus using the center button). I like the DJ's feature of scrolling above and below a list to get to the most usable letter for a track or artist faster. They both play superbly in my ears.

Absolutely. Sometimes there's more to a device than just storage size. I would like to have a mini to take with me when I don't feel like lugging around a brick. I know my GF doesn't care too much about how much she can get on a device, it's strictly the look/form factor. To some people capacity isn't everything; besides, I already have a 40GB iPod that can hold twice as much as my DJ.

To take it even further, if you wanted to follow some of the twisted logic that seems to reside on this message board, the DJ isn't the best bang-for-the-buck per GB when comparing it to the iPod - that title goes to the iPod 40GB:
  • Dell DJ15 ($199): $13.27/GB
  • Dell DJ20 ($251): $12.55/GB
  • Apple mini ($249): $62.25/GB
  • Apple 15GB ($299): $19.93/GB
  • Apple 20GB ($399): $19.95/GB
  • Apple 40GB ($499): $12.48/GB

Yeah but your paying $499...and at double capacity the price should drop significantly.

Price out an 80GB drive, and a 250GB drive...same holds true.

You need to compare 15GB to 15GB and 20GB to 20GB...comparing the mini is unfair, but at those prices it's hard to justify a mini.
