Anyone hacked DJ (bigger drive etc)?

When I was shopping around for an mp3 player, I discovered that the Creative Nomad has been extensively hacked, including drive upgrades. Since it uses standard notebook drives, there are instructions for swapping in a larger HD unit to increase capacity.
http://www.extremetech.com/article2...,1187061,00.asp

Another hacked unit is the older Archos unit. I saw a post on this forum where someone asked about the OS etc. Well there is a group of people who wrote and have made available a freeware OS for the Archos jukebox. Pretty amazing really. They didn't like the buggy OS that came with it and so wrote a new one. Don't know Archos doesn't buy or licence this OS.

I'm curious if anyone has info on the DJ internals - processor, hard drive etc. Not that I'm planning to do anything, but it might give clues as to how Dell/Creative will evolve the unit. eg When will we see a 40G and 60G Dell DJ.

For those wondering, I have a ridiculously huge CD collection ...

I don't believe this uses a standard laptop drive. I believe it is the smaller 1.8" drive. Standard Laptop uses 2.5".

Not sure, don't quote me.

Yeah.... that doesnt make much sense to me.... I mean, laptop HD's arent cheap.... you'd be better off to sell the DJ, take the money for the HD and buy one of the 60GB models.

You are correct...

The DJ uses a 1.8" HDD, just like most of the other compact HDD-based portable audio players. The Nomad is a much larger unit, which allows them to use the larger 2.5" HDDs (same as in a laptop).

The ipod uses 1.8" drives (I think) so this means a DJ with 40GB should be possible ...

Yes, Hitachi does make a 40GB 1.8" HDD, and Hitachi is the company who manufactures the DJ's HDD.....so it is possible that a 40GB could work. But nobody has tried it, so you would be taking a small risk in trying this. Keep in mind that trying anything like this, which is definitely not assured to work, would void your DJ's warranty.

Plus, getting a 1.8" 40GB drive would not come cheap.

size issue

i did some research on the C4K40, the 1.8" HD made by Hitachi and it comes in 20GB and 40GB, but no one offers the 40GB for sale. Furthermore, I found out that the 40GB version is 2.5mm thicker than the 20GB. So much for that hack.

i dont remember which MP3 player does this....i think iriver or something. but it has an option where the tracks can fade in and out of eachother so the whole listening session sounds like one large track. there are also a few other options that are available on other MP3 playas and not on dell..... do u think that that;s something that will be able to be "added" with newer firmware?

i'll get my dj20 on monday!!!

That's due to Apple buying them all .

Possibly, but Sony uses them in their TR line of PCs, and has been for years now. You can get the 40GB 1.8 easily through several places, just do a bit of searching.

I wonder if Dell will do a 4GB mini DJ (think Creative Muvo) ...

How successful is the DJ15/20 anyway? Does any site maintain mp3 player sales rankings?
